ORDINANCE NO. 776
AN ORDINANCE DEFINING AND ESTABLISHING VISION CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS
FOR STREET INTERSECTION CORNERS IN THE CITY OF MEADE, KANSAS.
WHEREAS, the safety of street intersections is dependent upon
unimpeded line-of-sight by motorists traversing adjoining streets;
WHEREAS, placement and height of structures, fences, landscape
features at street intersections can significantly affect the
ability of a motorist to see an approaching vehicle on an opposing
WHEREAS, the most effective means of securing open vision at street
intersections is through establishment of a defined vision clearance
area for street intersection corners; and
WHEREAS, the Governing Body of the City of Meade, Kansas finds it
advisable to establish standards and regulations for vision
clearance areas at street intersections in the City of Meade,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF
MEADE, KANSAS THAT:
Section 1. The term “Vision Clearance Area” shall mean: A triangular
area at the corner of an intersection of two streets, or a street
and a railroad, two sides of which are measured from the
intersection of the centerlines of the adjoining streets or the
intersection of a street centerline with a railroad centerline. The
third side of the triangle is a line connecting the ends of the
other two sides at points on the centerline measured ninety (90’)
feet in each direction from the intersection point of the two
Section 2. Within the defined Vision Clearance Area no walls,
fences, signs, structures or permanent obstructions, including
landscape features, shall exceed three (3’) feet in height measured
from the top of the curb, or in the case of no curb, the grade at
the centerline of the adjacent platted street.
Section 3. The Vision Clearance Area requirements shall not apply in
the downtown commercial area where such area is within the “C-1”
Retail Business District Zone.
Section 4. The provisions of this Ordinance shall govern where there
may be conflict between these regulations and other Ordinances of
the City and shall supersede the vision clearance regulations of the
existing Zoning Ordinance No. 699 of the City of Meade, Kansas, but
shall not apply to properties utilized for agricultural purposes.
Section 5. This Ordinance shall become effective from and after its
passage, approval and publication one time in the official newspaper
of the City of Meade, Kansas.
PASSED AND APPROVED by the City Council of the City of Meade,
